I Had a Dream

Last night I had a dream, in my sleep. It was not a great dream.

Perhaps after all these years of Krav Maga and various other martial arts it is inevitable that my dreams concern safety. In this dream I had a new contraption; something like a bicycle that can become a wagon, that can fold up. It was red. As usual I am not good with technical things, so some kind older lady on the street offered to help.

Make a long story short she stole the bike and got away.

Now what can we learn from this story. The feeling of being robbed is a feeling of helplessness, an awful feeling that causes great damage to the soul. We want to avoid this at all costs.

The case here involves placing trust where it should not be placed. Even if someone appears kind, we must always be on guard. Thieves come in many shapes and forms. Yes, there is human kindness but still we must be careful, very very careful.

What else can we learn from the this case?

Situational awareness is everything. Being alert, aware, watching your back, not trusting strangers is everything. We can avoid most troubles by being a little street smart.

One of our members just sent me a video, a crime caught on tape. Two guys taking a walk at 2:30 in the morning, being attacked with punches and then knives. One of the guys survived the attacks, the other did not.

First, yes we should be able to walk the streets at all hours of the day, that is correct. But being correct is not always being wise. Even if you must be out at such an hour you must be extra cautious. Do not let anyone get inside your safety zone.

When one of the walkers was attacked initially he raised up his hands. Now if he was doing that to prepare himself for an attack, great, but he was not. He was saying, "Hey, I am not looking for trouble". But this is useless when trouble is looking for you.

Of course had he known some Krav Maga knife defenses that would be helpful but he could have stayed safe with some basic common sense, which sadly was lacking.

So what can we learn from this dream of mine?

Life can be a dream but it can quickly turn into a nightmare. We must prepare.

We must train in situational awareness.

We must all learn at least the fundamentals of Krav Maga.

We must learn to be alert at all times, expect the unexpected, understand the cruel reality of this world. Trust no man until he has proven himself to be a friend. The deceiver can come in many ways. Keep your door locked at all times and beware when the criminal/terrorist comes knocking. Remember "Sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace".

Read these lyrics by the great poet Bob Dylan/Robert Zimmerman, he will learn a great deal about situational awareness and whom to watch out for.  Remember..sometimes Satan, he comes as a man of peace!!

Look out your window, baby, there's a scene you'd like to catch
The band is playing "Dixie", a man got his hand outstretched
Could be the Fuhrer
Could be the local priest
You know sometimes Satan, you know he comes as a man of peace.

He got a sweet gift of gab, he got a harmonious tongue
He knows every song of love that ever has been sung
Good intentions can be evil
Both hands can be full of grease
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

Well, first he's in the background, and then he's in the front
Both eyes are looking like they're on a rabbit hunt
Nobody can see through him
No, not even the Chief of Police
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

Well, he catch you when you're hoping for a glimpse of the sun
Catch you when your troubles feel like they weigh a ton
He could be standing next to you
The person that you'd notice least
I hear that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

Well, he can be fascinating, he can be dull
He can ride down Niagara Falls in the barrels of your skull
I can smell something cooking
I can tell there's going to be a feast
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

He's a great humanitarian, he's great philanthropist
He knows just where to touch you honey, and how you like to be kissed
He'll put both his arms around you
You can feel the tender touch of the beast
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

Well, the howling wolf will howl tonight, the king snake will crawl
Trees that've stood for a thousand years suddenly will fall
Wanna get married ? Do it now
Tomorrow all activity will cease
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

Somewhere Mama's weeping for her blue-eyed boy
She's holding them little white shoes and that little broken toy
And he's following a star
The same one them three men followed from the East
I hear that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.
