Tim Hillis - Cottonwood Combat, Cottonwood, Arizona
Mr. Tim Hillis joins our team with a rich and diverse background in martial arts. He has trained in traditional martial arts, law enforcement, and competitive martial arts. Of his thirty years in martial arts the past ten have been devoted to Israeli combat systems.
Mr. Hillis is a Law Enforcement Officer and Lead Defensive Tactics Instructor for his agency. In this capacity, he is responsible for overseeing the continuing DT education of more than 200 officers and Sergeants. He also serves as the primary DT and Physical Fitness Instructor to all cadets attending the Detention Academy for multiple agencies.
From Left to Right, Assistant Brian Driver, Lead Assistant Brian Moffat, Chief Instructor Tim Hillis
After training with some well known instructors, Mr. Hillis decided to join our team at IKI, something we are very excited about. It is not just his five black belts and 4th dan rank, it is his passion for Krav Maga, his idealism, his honesty and integrity.
I have been to Cottonwood Combat many times for extensive training with the staff and students. Tim Hillis is an outstanding practioner and a patient instructor. The "Brians" round out an excellent staff.
“Hey Hoot, why do you do it man; you some kinda’ war junkie? I won’t say a.... thing. Why? ‘Cause they won’t understand. They won’t understand it’s about the man standing next to ya’. That’s why we do it.... that’s why we do it.” Quote from the Movie Blackhawk Down as said by the character of Sgt. First Class Norm "Hoot" Hooten (Gibson in the film) played by Eric Bana
In Law Enforcement, we often develop a similar 'brotherhood' as those who serve in the military. In my shop I tend to promote the same type of camaraderie. The men, women and children in our classes form a sense of community which helps them to develop confidence in their skills. Not because they take it easy on each other, but because they make one another work hard enough to achieve that next level of competence. It is a challenge, but they are always successful! I am amazed at how quickly each of my students progress. I was told recently by an Officer for Arizona State Parks that he had not come to watch our class in about 30 days and he was shocked at how good each of my students had gotten in such a short period of time! It's because they are a team that cares about one another and their safety. So, yes, they do challenge one another - to bring out their very best, so when they look back in few months, they will see how valuable it is to accept no less in return. Because in each class, what's important is helping the person next to you - YOUR partner.
I’ve been involved in firearms training and competition off and on most of my life. I felt that I was more than able to defend myself regardless of the situation.About 4 years ago my wife and I were looking at an article written by a well-known firearms instructor. The highlight of the article, for me, was that the greatest percentage of defensive shootings were happening at an arms length (upwards of 80-90%). The author was pointing out that, as American instructors, we had been spending way too much time teaching our students pinpoint accuracy and not enough time on hand to hand combat skills. Wow! The light went on in our heads! Thus began our search for something that would give us and our students something worth learning. That search led us to Tim Hillis and Moshe Katz. Working with Tim Hillis the last couple of years has taught us more then there is room here to write about! The mindset we teach in Krav Maga shows people that it’s not about the weapon, it’s about the attitude. It’s about the will to overcome and win the fight! My firearms classes are no longer just teaching people to shoot, but how to fight! I think if we all admit it, that’s a big part of why we do what we do : Making a difference in the lives of people by giving them the tools to survive in extreme situations. The other part, as our senior instructor in AZ Tim Hillis says, “it’s about the guy next to you, that’s why we do what we do.”
As I look at the group of instructors with IKI and the experience we have within this organization, I can truly say that it is an honor to be part of this fine group of people. Thanks especially to you Moshe for making it all possible! We are all students, and sometimes we are given the blessing of teaching.

Born specifically for the purpose of training warriors to a state of readiness in a short period of time, it is exactly what is needed for civilians as well to learn to defend themselves. John LIPTAK
Santa Rosa Beach
President and Founder of The American Combat Federation
In November 2010 John was promoted by Moshe Katz to the rank of Phase One Instructor.
Mr. Liptak began his martial arts training in 1976, and has been training and teaching ever since. He was able to practice many systems and styles of fighting, by having multiple instructors and training at the largest dojo in the North West Florida. The dojo had numerous martial arts programs, including: Shotokan; Jujitsu; Boxing; Kickboxing; Full Contact Karate; and Hand to Hand Combat for the Special Operation Ranger Units and police departments in the area. Mr. Liptak rose quickly up through the ranks and became the head instructor.
Over thirty years later, he still serves as the Chief Instructor for the Red Dragon Martial Arts Academies and all affiliated schools, instructors, students, both past and present, under Grand Master Jim Rodriguez. Mr. Liptak spent four years in the United States Marine Corps and continued his training in multiple arts, with a focus on Chinese styles, as well as teaching and training Army personnel at Fort Myers and Marines in Arlington, Virginia. Mr. Liptak has served as a bodyguard in both the military and in a civilian capacity. He later formed the American Combat Federation in 1987 and opened a private dojo teaching his system after leaving the service and returning to Florida.
Through the years, he has worked with military, law enforcement, and private citizens alike. Mr. Liptak currently conducts seminars, teaches self-defense courses, women’s self-defense clinics, private lessons, as well as his own system. Mr. Liptak continues to train and seek knowledge of the martial arts and is very active in training, as well as attending seminars.
Mr. Liptak has learned many Krav Maga techniques through the years, but in March of 2010 he had the opportunity to train with Moshe Katz and was extremely impressed with the practicality and simplicity of Moshe’s Krav Maga system. He soon became a member of the IKI and adopted the techniques. Mr. Liptak believes that Moshe’s system is the most current and up to date Krav Maga system in existence, with the safest techniques for weapon disarms for both the defender as well as any bystanders.
Mr. Liptak looks forward to a long relationship with the IKI.

The Krav Maga techniques and principles taught by IKI founder Moshe Katz are tested, tried, and proven in combat and real life situations in Israel and around the world. It is a complete reality based system covering every area of confrontation and self-defense. The techniques are not static as taught decades ago. They are dynamic, constantly evolving, adapting, and changing to address real life situations. These techniques are safer and more effective than techniques in many similar combative systems. They are easy to learn, easy to remember, and easy to apply in many situations.

DREW ARTHUR - Owner of Lone Star MMA Gym: Ju-Jitsu/Thai Boxing/Law Enforcement Tactics-Arrest & Control Deputy. U.S. Marshal, Retired police Officer and Former U.S. Marine
In November 2010 Drew was promoted by Moshe Katz to the rank of Phase Two Instructor.
Drew and his wife own Lone Star MMA Gym/Relson GRACIE Jiu-Jitsu of Tyler TX. They both welcome you to this GREAT FACILITY. It is also much more than a multi-disciplined Martial Arts Academy. It is an Elite Functional Fitness Training Center, and a Reality Based Self Defense Center.
Black Belt in Japanese Jujitsu, Blue Belt awarded by Relson Gracie in Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Drew also holds a Black belt in Kempo. Drew continues to teach and train as a student under Relson GRACIE, Phil Cardella Black Belt in Relson GRACIE Jiu-Jitsu.
Drew is a former US Marine Infantryman/Military Policeman, South Florida Police Officer, and he served over 20 years with the US Marshals Service, in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Honolulu, Las Vegas, and Texas. Because of his work in Fugitive Investigations, Witness Protection, and Judicial Security with the U.S. Marshals Service, and because of his advanced background in martial arts Drew was able to attend Elite Military and Law Enforcement hand to hand, arrest and control courses/schools. He has attended the US Army Special Forces, Combatives Instructor Course, and the US Navy SEALS, Combat Fighting Course, Drew is also a graduate of the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu "G.R.A.P.L.E." Instructor Course, Frank Shamrocks Science of Officer Defense and Criminal Submission" Instructors Course, and Graduated from the Department of Homeland Security Federal Law Enforcement Training Center's' Defensive Tactics Instructor Training Program.
He also graduated from C.D.T. as a Tactical Master Instructor. He has been a certified as a Shoot-Fighting Instructor and is currently a Licensed Certified Texas Mixed Martial Arts Referee. Drew is a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer under Coopers Clinic, and a SMAC (Specialist in Martial Arts Conditioning), and a SPN (Sports Performance Nutrition Specialist) under the ISSA (International Sports Science Association).
He was certified by the US Federal Government as a Physical Security Specialist, Hazmat Specialist, Security Consultant, and an Executive Security Protection Instructor, Federal Law Enforcement Defensive Tactics instructor. Drew often says that having a Black Belt is only half of the equation. You need to know how to teach based on scientific principles. During his many years in law enforcement, Drew has worked the mean streets of South Florida, Hawaii, and Las Vegas as a fugitive investigator. He spent his last five years in Texas as a Senior Judicial Security Inspector for the US Marshals Service. His primary assignment was to protect the U.S. Federal Judges of East Texas, and the Federal US Court Facilities, among other duties.
In March 2008, he retired from the US Marshals and continues to work tirelessly to bring the best reality based defensive tactics, combative sport, and tactical law enforcement arrest and control instruction available to the East Texas area. Drew is a member of the Native American Law Enforcement Association.
DREW'S ADVICE ON FINDING GOOD INSTRUCTION: Drew always advises students to seek out a real instructor who has not only trained in self defense theory, but one such as himself, who has used his skills in actual violent situations. Drew has been involved in three documented empty handed gun take away situations with violent criminals (in the course of his job as a law enforcement officer/ agent).
Drew has used his skills in the arrest and control phase of arresting violent fugitives all over our nation, who were not willing participants. HE KNOWS WHAT WORKS AND DOES NOT WORK IN REAL SITUATIONS
He advises students to stay away from would-be- instructors who brag to students that they have been involved in numerous fights or altercations. You have to ask yourself why this person has been in so many fights, and is this good role model. Did this person's work put them into these situations, or is the person one who likes to brag, or not state facts.

Gary Hodges Jr, Basset
Gary joins us with a rich background in martial arts and fitness. He wrestled in High School, trained in Kempo, Submission grappling, boxing, judo and jujitsu. With the same philosophy as Krav Maga, he picked out the techniques and concepts that worked best.
When he heard about Krav Maga he did his best to train in this system but could not find a place to train until he found IKI.
We are proud and honored to have him aboard. In March 2010 Gary was promoted to first danblack belt in IKI Krav Maga, a rank well deserved. Gary continues to train hard, teach others, and try out the techniques in diverse situations. He is an innovator and a hard worker.
