From Left to Right, Assistant Brian Driver, Lead Assistant Brian Moffat, Chief Instructor Tim Hillis
After training with some well known instructors, Mr. Hillis has decided to join our team at IKI, something we are very excited about. It is not just his five black belts and 4th dan rank, it is his passion for Krav Maga, his idealism, his honesty and integrity.
I have been to Cottonwood Combat twice for extensive training with the staff and students. Tim Hillis is an outstanding practioner and a patient instructor. The "Brians" round out an excellent staff.
“Hey Hoot, why do you do it man; you some kinda’ war junkie? I won’t say a.... thing. Why? ‘Cause they won’t understand. They won’t understand it’s about the man standing next to ya’. That’s why we do it.... that’s why we do it.” Quote from the Movie Blackhawk Down as said by the character of Sgt. First Class Norm "Hoot" Hooten (Gibson in the film) played by Eric Bana
In Law Enforcement, we often develop a similar 'brotherhood' as those who serve in the military. In my shop I tend to promote the same type of camaraderie. The men, women and children in our classes form a sense of community which helps them to develop confidence in their skills. Not because they take it easy on each other, but because they make one another work hard enough to achieve that next level of competence. It is a challenge, but they are always successful! I am amazed at how quickly each of my students progress. I was told recently by an Officer for Arizona State Parks that he had not come to watch our class in about 30 days and he was shocked at how good each of my students had gotten in such a short period of time! It's because they are a team that cares about one another and their safety. So, yes, they do challenge one another - to bring out their very best, so when they look back in few months, they will see how valuable it is to accept no less in return. Because in each class, what's important is helping the person next to you - YOUR partner.

Because of his work in Fugitive Investigations, Witness Protection, and Judicial Security with the U.S. Marshals Service, and because of his advanced background in martial arts Drew was able to attend Elite Military and Law Enforcement hand to hand, arrest and control courses/schools. He has attended the US Army Special Forces, Combatives Instructor Course, and the US Navy SEALS, Combat Fighting Course, Drew is also a graduate of the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu "G.R.A.P.L.E." He was certified by the US Federal Government as a Physical Security Specialist, Hazmat Specialist, Security Consultant, and an Executive Security Protection Instructor, Federal Law Enforcement Defensive Tactics instructor. Drew often says that having a Black Belt is only half of the equation. You need to know how to teach based on scientific principles. During his many years in law enforcement, Drew has worked the mean streets of South Florida, Hawaii, and Las Vegas as a fugitive investigator. He spent his last five years in Texas as a Senior Judicial Security Inspector for the US Marshals Service. His primary assignment was to protect the U.S. Federal Judges of East Texas, and the Federal US Court Facilities, among other duties.
In March 2008, he retired from the US Marshals and continues to work tirelessly to bring the best reality based defensive tactics, combative sport, and tactical law enforcement arrest and control instruction available to the East Texas area. Drew is a member of the Native American Law Enforcement Association.
DREW'S ADVICE ON FINDING GOOD INSTRUCTION: Drew always advises students to seek out a real instructor who has not only trained in self defense theory, but one such as himself, who has used his skills in actual violent situations. Drew has been involved in three documented empty handed gun take away situations with violent criminals (in the course of his job as a law enforcement officer/ agent).
Drew has used his skills in the arrest and control phase of arresting violent fugitives all over our nation, who were not willing participants. HE KNOWS WHAT WORKS AND DOES NOT WORK IN REAL SITUATIONS
He advises students to stay away from would-be- instructors who brag to students that they have been involved in numerous fights or altercations. You have to ask yourself why this person has been in so many fights, and is this good role model. Did this person's work put them into these situations, or is the person one who likes to brag, or not state facts.
Bryce has been involved in combative sports since the age of ten, with an emphasis on boxing. He was eventually accepted as judge by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation - Combative Sports Commission and for Texas Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Association.
