Methods or Magic

I am in the USA, and it is September 14th but as I turn on my computer it reads September 15th, my computer is set to Israel. The first thing that pops into my mind is...Mom and Dads' anniversary.

Sadly, it is a bittersweet day as Dad has passed on to another realm, many years ago. How time flies. But I feel him with me all the time.

In honor of my dear parents' anniversary, I will use a marriage analogy. When a couple first meets it is Magic. There are sparks and Romance and flowers and all sorts of wonderful things and the world is filled with music. As time goes on the magic tends to fade a little and is replaced by methods; methods of making a relationship work.

All couples go through difficult times, but they make a decision to stick with it because they want to make it work. One cannot rely upon magic.

It is the same with Krav Maga self-defense. When a student first joins us we like to show them the stuff that feels magical, little tricks that are truly amazing. We want them to see the beauty of our style and gain confidence. As time emerges, we deal with some situations that are more challenging, more difficult, where matters become murkier.

At this point we explain to the students that there is no magic in the world but there is method. We teach you a solid methodology that has proven successful. We teach you a way of thinking that truly works.

We are not teaching magic martial arts, that is reserved for the movies. We are not teaching you KungFoolary, no, we live in the real world where bad things happen and we must deal with them. For this we do not offer magic tricks but a solid methodology that will improve your chances of survival and minimize the damage.
