Waiting is the Hardest Part

I remember it well, the anticipation of Tom Petty's new album, Hard Promises. We waited a long time for this. It was the early 1980's, Los Angeles, California, and every new release was a great anticipated event. But this album was going to be delayed, for a long time. Tom Petty was having a dispute with the record company. They wanted to raise the price of an album to $9.98 but he insisted on keeping it at $8.98. And he won. That extra dollar meant a lot to his fans. And the waiting for this great album was the hardest part. But it was worth it, it was truly a masterpiece.

We were young and the music was everything, and the fight for the ideal, fair pricing, loyalty to your fans. The music was the soundtrack of our lives.

That was many years ago and over this time I have come to learn that truer words have never been spoken, yes indeed, the waiting is the hardest part. That line has become part of my understanding of life.

We want something, we want it now. A baby or a child will scream and cry until it gets what it wants. An adult will do the same but keep that cry inside, self control. You are screaming inside but you must suffocate that scream. And the waiting is the hardest part.

You apply for a job, you are eagerly waiting an answer, but it can take a long time, in the meantime you still must live. But it is so difficult, and the waiting is the hardest part.

We want a black belt, we want the next rank but if we push too hard we will make mistakes. We need to be patient, we need to take our time, we need to wait, but the waiting is the hardest part.

We want a flower to grow, to blossom, but we must allow it it's time, each flower blossoms at its' own sweet time. You take it on faith. And the waiting is the hardest part.

The waiting tests every fiber of our body and our soul. We want it now, we want answers, we want certainty, we want security, we want to know!!

The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you see one more card

Yes every day we see a little bit more, we have a little more clarity and perhaps we understand why in this life we need to wait, we need to learn patience. We need to learn that we are not in control of the timing of life's events.

We want a pill to make us feel happy. We want a drink to make us feel good. We want a drug or a tea that will make us sleepy, we want so much out of life and want it now but the waiting is....the hardest part.

1981 - 2017, thank you for the music, and the message
