So you know Self Defense? You earned a rank, perhaps even a black belt. You excelled under stress in the dojo/training hall and now all your friends regard you as a super hero Ninja.
Don't let it go to your head. Remember, common sense comes first. We do not want to be in a position where we need to use our self defense. If we find ourselves using our self defense it means our God given early defense warning system has somewhat failed us. The first order of business is to avoid trouble and that begins by avoiding trouble spots.
When you are in a new area the first thing you need to do is learn what areas to avoid. This is not the training hall, we are not looking for a challenge or a chance to test our Krav Maga skills.
I am in New Zealand for the first time, learning about the different cultures and the different gangs, how they operate, where they hang out and...what areas to avoid.
I think of our Krav Maga training, of which I am quite proud, but the clearer mind says: Never be too confident, Stay out of trouble, don't go hanging around at night, an obvious outsider. First order of business: Avoidance.
We we deal with self defense we advocate AAPC - Avoidance, and then if we must defend we continue with A - Ability, P - Purpose , and C - Circumstances, to determine how to continue.
Common sense and our Gift of Fear must always overcome our perceived abilities. Imagine going up against a group of huge Samoans, they have weapons, they know the turf. Is this really an ideal situation? Is this where you want to be? Physical self defense is always the last resort.
I trust my skills, I trust our Krav Maga which has proven itself in many street encounters, but common sense comes first.
