Working with a new group of students in New Orleans area, some of whom have a great deal of experience in other styles, but here they see a difference. Or should I say, they don't see the difference but the feel the difference.
A song comes on the radio, an old one from the days where music was more to my liking, Blinded by the Light, yes, that is very relevant to self-defense. What the composers had in mind, I have no clue, in fact I found the words difficult to figure out, but Blinded by the Light, that has many meanings and many applications. In a way, it is profound. The light hits us, it could be the headlights of a car, or the Light of the Divine, or the Light of a new idea, and suddenly we are blinded. How do we cope with this new information? How do we walk in the light when we were used to darkness? We are initially blinded, and we must find out way.
We can close our eyes because the light is too bright, or we can learn to handle the new light. When you come across an idea that challenges all you held to be true, how do you handle it? Do you reject it because you cannot handle the LIGHT, or do try to understand it?
Blinded by the light, you are walking along, someone grabs you, they are violating your space, they are invading your very being, how dare they touch you! and now you try that cool move you saw on Facebook, you reach to grab their wrist, but you slip, it is dark, or you are blinded in some way, the light blinds you, the darkness prevents you from seeing, either way, you cannot see well and your cannot grab precisely. You did not count on that when you learned this cool move by some bad ass looking girl on youboob.
Blinded by the light, you cannot see as you did before, you try those kicks and strikes that worked so well on Facebook but now they miss their mark, it is dark, and the guy, get this, can move! he is not the choreographed actor from the video. Blinded, you are missing your mark, and without that precision the technique simply fails. But now you have angered your attacker and whilst before he might have been satisfied with a robbery now he wants revenge; your utter humiliation.
Therefore we at IKI Krav Maga reject any technique that relies upon: Speed, Precision or Strength. We call those the Three Amigos, the three unreliable friends, the friends who will let you down when you need them most.
Back to our seminar, back to our new students, they don't necessarily see the difference, they feel the difference. The techniques we teach are gross motor, simple, instinctive moves that work well when you are blinded by the light. They rely upon total Body Movement, not precision. It will work in the dark, it will work when you are tired. It will work!
We may face an attack when we are blinded by the light, or the darkness, and we may face a situation where a new Light appears to us, and this new awareness temporarily blinds us. The question is how do we handle this new information, this new awareness, but accepting it with an open mind or rejecting anything that challenges our existing beliefs?
