Do Not Wake me

I saw a film today oh boy, or, I saw a video today oh boy, a Krav Maga "Knife Defense", only I would better categorize it as Fantasy Training, And it made me wonder.
I recall walking with my rabbi in Brooklyn, surrounded by people who were in this world but not really of this world. They were outside of all politics, outside of the world most of us know. Some would call it a "Bubble". I commented that they were totally unaware of everything outside of their little world. One young man had never even heard of the Vietnam war, (we are talking about a stroll in the 1980's). And I commented to the rabbi that they are living in a Fantasy World. He looked at me with a knowing glaze, eyes twinkling and said, "Perhaps you should try it, you might be happier."
I thought of that today when I watched these intelligent people training in a knife defense that defied reality, like they were living in an otherly world, a parallel universe where such knife defenses would work as attackers stand still in mid-motion and wait for you to grab their wrists, hit them in the face and flip them over.
These are intelligent people, highly intelligent people, how can they believe this? How can they believe that they will grab the wrist of the attacker, mid-stream, perfectly accurately, hold him there for a moment without any resistance, hit him in the face three times, and of course the attacker turned victim does not move this entire time, his position remains perfectly still while the three punches hit exactly the same spot. And it makes me wonder, can anyone actually believe this? How can such a system spread, and among Israelis? I thought we were supposed to be an intelligent people!
And I don't have a good answer, but an old song comes to mind...
Please, don't spoil my day, I'm miles away, and after all, I'm only sleeping
and I think of the words of the rabbi, perhaps you would be happier.
The only snag is that if one actually met reality, clashed with reality, the entire "Bubble" would burst. Fantasy can work as long as it never meets reality. You can believe you are John Lennon until you meet the actual John Lennon, and then your fantasy collapses. You can feel you are the greatest fighter of all time until you are in an actual fight. The awakening can be deadly.
But the man in the Bubble is happier not to be disturbed by reality. He feels those who choose reality are truly the crazy ones, not him!
Everybody seems to think I'm lazy, I don't mind, I think they're crazy
He prefers to stay in his dream, in this case the Fantasy Martial Arts world where he has built his empire, his castle.
When I'm in the middle of a dream, Stay in bed, float up stream
I cannot really explain the logic of these defenses, and yet they grow in popularity. Please don't wake me, no don't shake me, leave me where I am. I am happier over here in my fantasy world.
As long as no one disturbs the dream, they are fine. Many Israelis lived in a fantasy that peace can be achieved with brutal blood thirsty terrorists. October 7th woke them up, with a terrifying bang. Sleep, float down steam, but at your own risk...
