In the early part of the previous century this was a common practice, and growing up I heard this phrase a lot. The term Snake oil salesman became a common label used to describe someone who sells, promotes, or is a general proponent of some valueless or fraudulent cure, remedy, or solution. The term snake oil has since been established in popular culture as a reference to any worthless concoction sold as medicine.
While today people mock the idea that once people were so foolish to believe this and in fact pay large sums of money for this miracle cure the truth is today this type of fraudulent activity is even more prevalent, we see it daily on the internet and on TV. On any given day we will see the most incredible claims on weight loss and fitness.
Add just a tablespoon of this magic potion to your morning coffee and within 2 weeks you will be thin. Do 15 minutes of exercise per day while sitting on a chair and within a month you will be so fit and muscular that you will not recognize yourself, purchase this App and within two weeks you will be speaking a new language like a native.
Snake Oil, just a new format. So why should self-defense be left out? These styles should not be called Krav Maga, these instructors should be called, Grand Masters of the Magical Snake Oil. In just two weeks you will be able to defeat any attacker!
But how would you know? There is an old saying that dates to those days, Buyer Beware, a fool and his money are quickly parted. There is easy way for those unfamiliar with the product to know the difference just a non-mechanical person can and is cheated by car mechanics all over the world daily.
So you have to do some research. And you have to ask around, and you have to employ some common sense.
Remember this - They are selling you dreams. and if it sounds too dreamy, it most likely is. We can teach you the foundations in a very short amount of time, and even after the first lesson you will indeed see a difference in your ability, but you will not be a black belt in two weeks, although many do ask for this. We turn them down but there are plenty of Snake Oil Grand Masters who do offer this service.
Dreams are wonderful, but a well planned out program will help you achive those dreams while the Snake Oil master will only leave your poorer and oilier.
