There are many stories and allegories about the power of water, something that seems so weak and gentle and yet can be so powerful. The power of water can generate energy to be used for constructive projects, the power of water, as in a tzunami, can destroy a city. One of my favorite inspirational stories is of the scholar Rabbi Akiva, who up to the age of 40 had apparently not studied at all. He wanted to study the Torah, the scriptures but was discouraged. And then he saw a stone that over many years had been shaped by the flow of water over it, and he thought, if the stone, which is so strong and so solid, can be shaped and grooved by the water, which is so soft, then certainly the knowledge and wisdom of the Torah can penetrate my head. And so he became of the greatest Jewish scholars of all time,
Winston Churchill known for his motivational speeches and witty comments, said something along the lines of, the drop of water does not wear down the stone by its power but by its consistency. (I don't have the exact quote, if anyone knows it, please let me know.)
When I am asked about my "success" in martial arts and how I reached the ranks and status that I have, with more than one thousand international seminars and many awards, I answer simply, it is not that I am athletic, or a natural athlete, or physically strong, or gifted in any way, my one great quality is that I am consistent, or as my dear later mother would say, I am stubborn. When I began to learn to play the guitar, I played hours per day until my fingers bled. When I began my karate training, I attended 5 lessons per week and practiced at home, hitting the makiwara until my knuckles bled. Now you know my secret.
And so it is. I don't make excuses, I make plans. I invest in myself, in my training. I showed for class when I was tired, when the body said stop but the spirit said NEVER.
And so, like the drop of water, we do not win because of our power but because of our consistency. Now you have all the secrets to success.
