I read about a woman who worked for 911 Emergency Call services. She was convicted of negligence on the job. The charge against her was that she did not handle phone calls properly. Records revealed that she took the call, listened for a few seconds and then hung up. The call was not registered with anyone; it was not passed on. No emergency services were provided. In some cases, the caller called back and was received by a more attentive responder. In other cases, it turned out that the lack of response caused the death of the person at risk. Had the response been rapid, had the call been handled properly, a heart attack victim could have been saved, a fatal shooting involving a robbery might have been averted, an attack could have been minimized.
When the worker was confronted with the facts, her reply, her "Defense" was, I was just not in the mood to talk to anyone, so I hung up.
This is of course shocking. She was of course fired, but received a very minimal punishment. The way I see it she is an accomplice to murder.
This morning while walking to the synagogue before dawn, my thoughts wandering to the events of the previous day, I thought about this situation, I thought about the lives that could have been saved, and then I thought, we all receive an Emergency Call, but we too hang up, we too are guilty of neglect that can lead to murder, rape and death.
We receive Emergency Calls all the time, whenever we turn on the news, turn on our computer. Every day I read horrific stories; lover kills her husband's wife, girl murdered by her classmates, woman murdered on subway, it is endless. So what is this? Just an interesting story? for me it is an Emergency Call, a wakeup call, and one that is being dropped by most responders. Just as the Guilty former 911 Responder said, "I just did not feel like listening to these people at that moment, so I hung up." Most of us are the same, we hear the "Call" but we are not interested in listening, we hear the beginning and we get bored and just hand up.
But if that call were about you? What if the warning was about your child, your family? Would you be so quick to drop the call? I sure hope not, but that is exactly what is happening today. I am in California and I hear that many martial arts schools have closed their doors during this past year. Many Krav Maga schools are struggling.
We are here to offer a service, we the instructors are Essential Service Providers, you need us! Answer the call, before it is too late. The phone is ringing....
