Tomorrow in the synagogue we will read the Torah portion of Toldoth, "And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham begot Isaac." (Genesis, Chapter 25). Once again, we visit our ancestors who lived here in the Land of Israel, we sit with them, we listen to them and we share their struggles and frustrations, and we learn from them for our own times. Rebekka struggled to have children "And Isaac entreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD let Himself be entreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived." and finally she was to have not one, but two boys, twins, what a joy!
But alas she felt something was wrong, "And the children struggled together within her". Already the boys were fighting and she wondered, What is the purpose of all this, why do I live? Why do I have to deal with such a conflict?
The passage leaves a lot of room for interpretation, and the traditional Biblical commentators offer different ideas, but what is clear is that Rebekka was very troubled. Rabbi Moshe son of Nachman said she went and spoke to other women and asked if this was normal for a pregnancy. When she was told that it was not, she realized something was amiss. And so, she sought spiritual guidance. "And she went to inquire of the LORD" .
The answer she received offered no relief, but it did offer an understanding, and in my opinion, a lesson for all time. And God, the Eternal, or a prophet of God, The Divine Force, informed her, "Two nations are in your womb, two powerful nations, and they will be antagonists from birth onwards, and the older shall serve the younger."
Let us think about these words;
She is not being told, Don't worry, it will be OK, boys will be boys, they will grow out of Rebekka.
She is not being told, peace will come.
No, she is being told these two who are already fighting in the womb are inherently different, inherently at odds, and so they shall remain, forever! Deal with it! Conflict is eternal. There will be no peace, one will eventually serve the other, but the other will fight back, he will not accept this lowly status. War, conflict, Revolution.
The other day, on Tour and Train Israel Experience, we visited the Old City of Jerusalem, I told our group, Jerusalem has been attacked 52 times, changed hands 44 times, was under siege 23 times. Peace has not been achieved.
We visit our ancestor Rebekka, we listen to her troubles and we understand the message, there will be conflict in life, sometimes there will be no solution. The only solution is to deal with the conflict, the struggle, it is from the womb, from the nature of people. To believe that you can always find a solution is foolishness. We live in the real world.
Three thousand seven hundred years have passed and we still have conflict, between nations, between individuals. The lesson is learn to live in conflict. In Israel, we have certainly learned this. Those who believed in the illusion of peace have lulled themselves into a sleepy mode, and that is the true reason why the Massacres of October 7, 2023, took place, national sleepiness.
We visit Mother Rebekka and she teaches us, there will be conflict, be aware of this, prepare for this, Thrive in the Chaos of Conflict. Be strong, for it is not going away.
