Every Five Years

I am in Troy for our Krav Maga seminar, and I am staying in the same lovely hotel that I have been a guest of for many years. I have seen its ups and downs, I have been here during Covid when the place was practically empty, and one staff member had to do the job of four. I have seen the staff change many times and last year the change of ownership.
For the past couple of trips Steven has been the breakfast job. He only works mornings and is in charge of setting up and serving breakfast and keeping the place clean. He takes his job very seriously and does a wonderful job. There are always fresh eggs, milk, yogurt, he constantly makes sure that everything is in full supply, he makes sure the waffle machine is filled so that a customer never has to worry about pressing the lever and having no pancake mix come out. The coffee is fresh and hot, and again, when you press the lever, you never have to worry about it coming up empty, something I have experienced in other hotels. (or it being lukewarm).
He is the breakfast guy, and as my father taught me, you show respect. It does not matter if he is the CEO, owner of the hotel, or "just" the breakfast guy, he is important. So I greeted him warmly and we have our little daily chat. He is a kind man, and he takes pride in his hotel. He tells me about all the renovations that have taken place recently, some of which I experienced myself during my previous visits. And then, with a certain feeling of ...anxiety, he points out that "we need to keep up with the fancier hotel across the street and the new hotel that just opened down the road."
And then he offers some wisdom and tells me that every five years a hotel must totally "reinvent itself" or remodel itself. It must change things, it must update the furniture, it must replace the carpeting. The carpeting in the breakfast area was replaced by a very nice modern wooden flooring. The room has a new look to it, and Steven points out various changes that have taken place, upgrades and improvements.
and then I thought, it is the same with Krav Maga, at least it should be, but for most styles of self-defense, it is not. Everything remains the same, but not with us, not with IKI. Daily I research new cases of violence, daily, our members send me videos from around the world. I travel the world and become aware of the violence, and I incorporate the lessons into our system. And I travel the world and teach, the great variety of people I am exposed to challenges me, as I need to improve the way I teach, improve the way I break down and explain a technique so that it is clear to people across many lands and cultures.
Like the hotel we must stay up to date, and like the hotel I would say that every five years IKI Krav Maga looks like a different style. That is why it is an absolute requirement of all our instructors to be members of our online program where you receive daily video updates.
