Finishing Moves APC

Many styles of martial arts pride themselves on showing their "Finishing moves", i.e. how to you end the confrontation, perhaps by stomping the groin, a side kick that sends him flying etc. We do not. We say, we give you the basic defense, but the ending depends on APC - your Ability, your Purpose in being there, and the Circumstances.
Real fights are not katas, (pre-arranged forms) where you can map out the entire sequence of events. Life is dynamic. Each situation is unique.
This past week we had a perfect example; the attempted Flydubai airline hijacking. Several passengers worked together to overcome the terrorist, stabilize the plane, save the life of the pilot, prevent the flight attendants from interfering, and landing the badly damaged aircraft safely.
A passenger named Yaniv Hayoun attacked the terrorist from behind as he was trying to damage the controls of the aircraft and got him in a choke hold. The passenger, a plumber by profession, has strong hands, he is used to physical labor. Having worked as an assistant plumber myself, I understand how physically demanding the job is.
Hayoun placed the terrorist in a choke hold, pulled him back and took him out of the cockpit, now the question is - but what about the finishing move?
Now had he learned Krav Maga, or Combatives, he might have been trained with some finishing moves, and done those instinctively. But what are the circumstances here? The plane is about to crash. The terrorist is violent and is young and strong and is actively resisting. Hayoun did not have the time to "finish him off" nor the time to control him. He had to prevent the aircraft from a crash that was imminent.
Thus we look at APC
Ability - Hayoun did not have the ability to both control the terrorist and fly the plane at the same time, and prevent the flight attendants from rescuing him.
Purpose - Hayoun's purpose was to prevent the plane from crashing and killing the 180 or so people on board.
Circumstances - There were other Israeli on board, already near the cockpit, eager to help.
Response - Considering the APC he called for help. He called in Hebrew for other Israelis to help subdue and control the terrorist, which they did.
Hayoun's response was perfect, and all the passengers survived. Their fate was decided by a matter of seconds, and a split-second correct decision.
This is an example how and why APC works, and why we do not dictate to our students any "Finishing moves"; we teach them options and responsible decision making. The final decision on how to concluse the altercation will be made on the spot, in the moment of truth, what we can do is prepare you with tools and options.
