A young Woody Allen, Allan Stewart Konigsberg
The Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, has just ended. This is a time of reflection, accounting., not financial accounting, but an accounting of our souls; what have we done with our lives? What have we done to make the world a better place? What have we contributed to the world during this past year? What have we done to make ourselves a better person?
During his standup comedy years Woody Allen had a routine where a man sees his therapist as he is feeling down, dejected, lacking hope. He feels he is getting nowhere in life; he wants more out of life. The Therapist asks, what would make you feel better about yourself, what do you think would make you feel more positive about your life? The man feels that a college degree, a college education would be good for him, improve his self-esteem and help find a more fulfilling and better-paying job. Then why not go to college? asks the psychologist. The man answers, "That would take me five years of night school!"
"And what is the problem with that?" asks the psychologist, The man answers, "I am 30 years old! I am too old to begin college!"
The Psychologist responds, "And how old will you be in five years from now, when you are graduated from college?
"Thirty-Five!" answers the patient, feeling this is a very old age for a college graduate.
"And how old will you be in five years if you do not sign up for college?
The patient replies, "Thirty-five, how come the same?"
This is a comedy, a Jewish comedy skit, and it contains a great deal of truth. I used this on one my students years ago, to my amazement this little story motivated her to register for nursing school. (She never realized my story was from a Woody Alan skit). She became a nurse, a new and fulfilling career and credited me with motivating her on this life-changing decision.
The lesson I wish to share here is let us think of where we are now in life and are we satisfied with who we are and what we have. If not, let us think where we might be, where we can potentially be, in five years from now.
I will apply this specially to Krav Maga self-defense training.
Today you might be feeling insecure, unsafe, not able to defend yourself, not able to stand up for yourself in business negotiations, even in conversations. In Five years' time you may see yourself as a secure individual, walking with confidence, closing deals and able to fight back if attacked. But this takes one move on your part: A decision, and decisions scare you.
I am sacred to make a decision
We are afraid of making decisions, so we do not invest in that company, and we do not purchase that house, and we do not get married. Now in some cases, those turn out to be the correct decisions, but in most cases the lack of positive action is not due to a careful risk-assesement but rather out of pure fear. The other guy is happily married, with a house and income from a great investment while we are still living in a rented basement apartment waiting...to make a decision.
What more information do you need to feel secure about this decision? What specifically is making you hesitate?
When a prospective student walks into your Krav Maga school, and expresses an interest, but then says, "I need more time". You have to ask them, without pressure, why? What specifically is your doubt, please express it and we can address it. Not making a decision may hold you back from achieving what you dream of achieving. The fact that you walked into here today means you are seeking something. Let us help you achieve this.
Saying, "Sure, take your time", is the same as saying, get lost and never come back.
Ask questions; what prompted you to look into Krav Maga? Let them tell you what they want. We do not offer a "sales pitch"; listen to them, what are their needs, how can we help them overcome their feels and achieve their maximum potential in life. This is what we are all about.
How can we help you transform your life so that in five years from now you can look back and say - That was the BEST decision of my life!!!
At IKI we have changed many lives, we have transformed many people. We want to continue doing this. For this we need more instructors dedicated to this goal. Perhaps you are one of them?
