When I was a child there was a popular TV show called Gilligan's Island. It was a comedy about a group of seven very different characters, all unrelated except for one couple, who took a 3-hour cruise, but their boat crashed on a deserted island, and they became stuck there, forever.
It was a comedy, and the stranded team learned to get along with each other, overcome their differences and find a way to make a life on this abandoned island. Of course, the group could never be rescued, as that would end the show, but there was a movie, many years later, where they were finally rescued and had to return to "normal" lives.
Looking back, so many years later, I am thinking perhaps there was a certain philosophical bent to this comedy, as life is a comedy, and a tragedy, as well. Somehow, they were never able to repair the boat or send a message to civilization or draw the attention of any passing ships or aircraft. Now I understand that in the context of the show, they could not be rescued. But perhaps there is more.
They were able to come up with all sorts of ingenious devices to survive, including using their little boat for various inventions. They were able to adapt and survive, but they could never get out of the loop. They could never get off the island.
We are living in very difficult times, not only in Israel but in many places worldwide. With the tremendous increase in violence, and the constant complaining about it and the constant "raising of awareness" about it, one would think that attendance at Krav Maga or self-defense classes would skyrocket, but they are not, not at all. And I ask, why?
I feel they too are caught in a loop; they want to get out, but they cannot. They adapt to the situation, and complain about it, but yet are never rescued, they are destined to stay on the island, to stay undefended, unempowered, unable to fend off an attacker. They are in their own little deserted island, stuck forever...circling around in an endless loop.
