This past Shabbat we read, "When you go out to battle against your enemies, and God delivers them into your hands" (Deuteronomy Chapter 21, verse 10)
There are many powerful lessons here, relevant for us today, both in Krav Maga self-defense and in life in general. A seemingly causal introduction, when you go out to war. But there is a message here. Often, we want things in life, but we don't want to "go out", or in modern terms, leave our comfort zone, think outside the box. The message here is that God is promising us to deliver our enemies into our hands, but, there is a condition, there is a prerequisite. We must first Go out. If we want God to deliver our enemies into our hands, we must first go out and fight.
In Krav Maga self-defense terms, everyone wants to feel safe, everyone wants God or some Force to "deliver the enemy to us", and that we should prevail and arrive home safely, but they are not willing to "go out to war", they are not willing to go to class and actually train, they are asking for deliverance but they are refusing to fulfill the condition, when you go to war.
God is promising to deliver the enemy into your hands, when you go out to war, not when you stay home and watch TV. The message - you want something, Go out and get it. Simply and true, but usually ignored.
"When you build a new house, then you shall make a railing/protective fence, for your roof, so that you should not bring blood upon your house, if any man falls from there" (Deuteronomy 22, 8)
Here the text is teaching us again about self-defense and our responsibility. You built a house, the roof is flat, and the concern here is that someone might go on the roof and being that there is no railing, no protective fence, he might accidently fall. The Bible teaches us that in the event of such a tragedy you, the homeowner, are responsible. You have placed blood in upon your house, upon yourself.
In Krav Maga terms, if you do not encourage others to train in Krav Maga, and then tragedy strikes, the blood is upon your head, you have allowed this to happen.
Powerful Biblical lessons.
