There are things that we truly cannot afford. Such things include troubled relationships with parents or siblings that result in years of not speaking, losing a dear friend over misunderstandings and lack of proper communications, such things we cannot afford. We cannot afford to lose those dear to us over petty differences.
There are also physical things we really cannot afford. Most of us cannot afford to own a private plane or have a limousine with a chauffeur. But there are other things that we cannot afford not to purchase, with time or money. There are things in life where the cost of not purchasing them will be more than outweighed with the consequences of our future losses. We cannot afford to neglect taking care of our health. We cannot afford to ignore the dentist, and our teeth, for that will surely result either in the permanent loss of our teeth or in very expensive dental work. It is far less expensive to have a bi-yearly checkup with the dentist than to ignore the matter for years. A rich person will be able to pay the dentist for all the extra work but the poor man will struggle. That is why I say, the less money you have the more you cannot afford to pay now for your dental care. The same is true for many aspects of our lives.
I did not want to spend money on home protection. I did not want the cost of reenforced doors and gates, alarms, light sensors etc. As a result, my home was broken into and in the end, I had to pay for all the home protection devices that I ignore. The old saying, a penny wise a pound foolish. i.e. you are careful, or stingy, with small amounts, and in the end, you will have to pay out large amounts.
I have just returned from a Krav Maga seminar tour of several countries, and in each place I taught I heard stories of those who were victimized by terrible unspeakable crimes and peronsal violation. It was then that they decided to start training in Krav Maga. I am not judging them, they had the wisdom to join, while others in their situation did not. I myself did not purchase home protection until after my home was broken into. That is our nature, sadly.
But what if we could turn back the clock, what if we could begin our Krav Maga training before the terrible crime took place, wouldn't that be great. Now of course Krav Maga is not a perfect solution for every situation. There is no question about that. There are crimes that are beyond our abilities to handle on our own. We are not fictional characters in a movie. We cannot perform the ridiculous stunts that we see in action films, that is pure fantasy. But there is a great deal that we can do, there are a great many situations where our training can, and has, saved lives.
and now the question; can you truly afford not to train? You can ignore your teethy for a few years, it will cost you in terms of money and discomfort, but you will be OK. But what about the effects of violence? Can you really afford to take that chance? Do you really want to play Russian Roulette with your life? Can you really afford the consequences of not training in self-defense?
