Bruce Lee, the straight lead jab/punch

An instructor in the Bruce Lee system demonstrating the Straight Lead Punch
Our main striking techniques in IKI are Not punches. There are many limitations and they are not easy for women and smaller people. A punch uses a very small surface area, requires accuracy, (see how many punches miss in a professional boxing or kickboxing match) and the skill to make a proper punch. An improper punch will cause the knuckles to break or the wrist to twist badly, causing serious pain. On the other hand, palm strikes are easier to use and very effective for self-defense, not for competition or street brawls. Forearm strikes, which we use heavily in IKI, use a much larger surface area, and again, you cannot break anything while using them.
However, there are some times, for some individuals, where a punch is of great benefit, but which one? Which style?
My choice for an opening punch comes directly from the Bruce Lee method. Of course, I never met Bruce Lee but I did meet some of his students over the years and I took upon myself to train in his core style, Wing Chun Gung Fu, with an Authentic sifu/instructor from China from the same lineage as Lee Jun Fan, (Bruce Lee). This punch is referred to as the Straight Lead Punch. In my humble opinion it is the best, most realistic and most effective punch for self-defense.
It is a punch that is well suited for self-defense, as well as sport competition, and for smaller people such as Bruce Lee. He emphasized that point, often saying that There is a good chance that you will face a stronger and larger opponent, so we must make best use of what we have. Keep in mind that Lee was not a tall man and he lived most of his life in the USA where people are taller than his native Hong Kong. My own Wing Chun instructor, also a short man, stressed, I will fight my fight, the close-range fight, not your fight, you are a tall American, I am short Chinese man. So this style is suited for smaller people fighting back against larger people with more muscle and longer reach. Thus, it is perfectly suited for our style of IKI Krav Maga. In fact, many of the principles of Bruce Lee's style are totally in sync with IKI Krav Maga. I have been told by Jeet Kune Do practitioners that IKI is the closest thing they have seen to the original concepts that Lee was advocating. This will become clearer as we progress.
Let us discuss this punch. In the various styles of Karate that I studied the punch was basically the Oy Tzuki, or the classic Horizontal punch. I, along with many others, find this punch uncomfortable, and it takes longer to complete, i.e. the final twist to make it horizontal is an extra moment. This may not seem like much but in a real fight that extra "step" is meaningful. I am not here to criticize or analyze Karate, it has its' own logic, but just to explain my preference for the Straight Lead Punch as taught and used by Bruce Lee.
I find that the extra step means another split second, and in a self-defense situation, every second counts. As Lee said our goal is daily elimination of steps, and Economy of Motion, two points that are central to IKI Krav Maga principles as well. There is a great deal of Bruce Lee's wisdom incorporated in our style.
The straight lead punch comes from the Lead Leg, thus the name, there is a good chance you will face a stronger opponent, so you need to be quick with your stronger side. Therefore, Lee advocated that rather than the front arm being the less-dominant arm and the Cross Punch coming afterwards from the stronger side, start with your stronger side and deliver a quick strike with this stronger dominant side. Remember, the other guy started the fight, he is the aggressor, and he will most likely be stronger, or bigger, so we need to hit him fast with our best weapon Now, not later. Every second counts.
The motion, the trajectory, of this punch comes from Wing Chun Gung Fu. The punch does not depend upon a big body swing like Western Boxing which takes more time. As I was taught, the straight punch comes directly from the Core of the body and uses the entire body, not just the arm, Total Body Movement like the IKI principles. We make use the feet, a quick punch, vertical rather than Horizontal, and we hit while thrusting our entire body forward. We will take a slight step forward with our lead foot as we deliver the punch.
I believe that the diagonal fist is stronger and is better supported by the structure of the body, it can deliver more impact faster, and safer for us. Bruce Lee took a very scientific approach to developing his style, modeling it for efficiency, and utilizing all the tools in our power with the assumption of facing a larger opponent on the street. Remember, Lee grew up in the tough Urban environment of Hong Kong.
I teach it with a forward thrust and a little twist as the punch connects, adding a little extra "bite" to it, a little sting. Thus, the punch is vertical but angled.
Personally, I have used this in many full-contact fights, vs boxers, karate men and kickboxers. It is fast, unexpected and powerful.
