Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world (John Lennon, The Beatles)
Change, we fear it, it is uncomfortable. It is easier to fall back into the familiar, Nothing's gonna change my world. I love that song, Across the Universe, and play it often on guitar, it has a meditative effect on me. I go back with the song to when it was first released. I remember purchasing the album with my allowance money back in 1970. Life has changed a lot since then, some forever not for better, in my life.
and as I play the song, and close my eyes, I feel it, Nothing's gonna change my world, I want them back, my mom, my dad, I don't want anything to change. I want to visit my Uncle Seymour and Aunt Rose, I want to take the train to see my aunts Esther and Sylvia, I want to see my grandfather Isaac smile again, and listen to my grandmother speaking in Yiddish. Nothing's gonna change my world. I can repeat it as often as I want, but the fact remains
Life does change, and we must accept that. and in certain ways we too must change or else we will pay a heavy price. We can chant as long as we want but nothing will bring back the past...The past is gone, It went by like dusk to dawn, Isn't that the way? Everybody's got their dues if life to pay
So we must move on...but change is difficult. Change is uncomfortable, but there is something we must consider: The Impact of Not Changing.
I had a relative, a brilliant man, a good man, a financial genius and great Talmudic scholar, his one flaw was his weight. He was warned, he knew what the future held if he did not change. He planned his financial future, he arranged money for his wife and kids, and then he died of a heart attack, way too young. The Impact of not changing. Maybe tomorrow the God Lord will take you away.
We fear change and yet we should fear not changing. The Impact, the cost, of not changing may be too great to bear. Einstein said if you keep doing the same thing you will get the same results. We need to change, despite how uncomfortable it is. As they say nowadays, to think outside the box.
A man lies on the couch feeling depressed, he is eating his pizza and drinking his beer. He is watching the fights or a basketball game and yelling at the screen, insulting the players as he wallows in his miserable state. change. The impact of not changing is remaining in that miserable state. The Impact of not changing is your life never progresses, you remain stagnant. You stagnate and never achieve your potential or your dreams. Dream on. Dream with me.
You are thinking of starting a fitness program, of joining a gym, or of starting Krav Maga lessons, but, change, it is difficult. but you must!!!
You must do it, for yourself, for the cost of not changing is too great, it may be your very life! The impact of not changing could be your health, your safety.
We tend to think of the cost of doing something, and the inconvenience of change, but really, we should think of the cost of Not doing something. I did not want to spent money on protecting my home, it would cost me too much. So I did nothing, and my house was robbed, the cost of not doing anything was very great indeed. The impact of not losing weight, of not learning to protect yourself, could be much worse than physical property.
I am wearing the same style flannel shirts I wore 40 years ago, so perhaps I am not very stylish, but my Krav Maga is constantly changing, constantly being upgraded to meet the demands of real violnce all over the world. The impact of not doing anything, of teaching the same old stuff would be too great.
A family member died, the impact of not changing was devastating.
Can we truly afford not to change? Can we afford the impact, the cost, of remaining complacent in our lives? That is a choice each and every one of us must make.
I worked in a bank in Israel, I was stuck. I had the opportunity to move on, but others stayed, it was a steady job, regular increases in salary, albeit very small ones, cost of living raises. Security. but they were unhappy. I took a risk, rented a small place and started teaching children, the rest is Krav Maga history. Today some of them speak of me, "I knew him when..."
