I am a student of history and of archeology. I want to understand the past; how did we get to our current state of being. I also believe that one cannot understand religious faith and traditions without understanding the historical development.
The field of archeology is a fascinating but controversial area. Simply put things are not always as they appear. A find is open to interpretation, artifacts do tell a story, but they also open many questions. In a recent study the archologists found a site that was inhabited for a period of time, and then suddenly, abandoned. They could not understand why. Many theories were proposed until the idea was proposed that the habitation site served a purpose for a while, fulfilled its Intended Purpose, and then was abandoned. This is something that had not occurred to anyone for a long time, as we often misjudge situations as we do not understand what the intended purpose was.
There is something profound here. If we do not properly understand the intended purpose, we will misinterpret the actions. And this leads me to Krav Maga.
What is the purpose of Krav Maga? The answer is - to get home safely. Period. There are no other objectives. Now there may be other objectives for individual practitioners, for one it may be a personal goal to earn a black belt since their great uncle Moe had a black belt. For another it may be the idea of personal empowerment, or to achieve a goal. Whatever ones' personal objectives may be, and those are all legitimate and praiseworthy, the fact remains that the style was created for the purpose of personal protection.
As such we need to understand the Intended Purpose, and not be confused, distracted, or derailed by other ideas. We focus on self-defense. When a "Krav Maga" school focuses on fitness, or on creating the "Bad Boy" image, then they have left the realm of true Krav Maga. Whatever value those objectives may have, they are not the original intended purpose of Krav Maga.
This idea dictates how we at IKI approach Krav Maga. If talking about Awareness will help save your life, then that must be part of the class as it helps fulfil the Intended Purpose. If learning how to diffuse a situation will help save you, that too must be included. If learning how to properly cross the street will get you home safely, that too is included. We keep the Intended Purpose in mind at all times.
Archeologists might be baffled why a perfectly suitable site was abandoned, but perhaps it served its Intended Purpose, perhaps it was intended only for the hunting season, or the harvest season, and then it was time to move on. We need to understand the Intended Purpose.
Our program at IKI Krav Maga remains focused on the original intended purpose of getting home safely, not just for super athletes but for everyone. We will not allow ourselves to be distracted by tournament type training, ego type training, or image training. We are here for the people. The Perfect System for Imperfect People.
