Krav Maga Accountability

In all aspects of life, we demand Accountability.

What does this mean?

If you are CEO of a company, if you the president or Prime Minister of a country, people will demand to see that you have done a good job. People will demand to know that you spent the money properly and did not squander it on company lunches, or even worse, embezzle it. You have to offer an exact accounting of what you did with the money and what you did with your time in office. You must prove that you did not abuse the power or the trust the people put in you.

But how is this done? We need objective outside committees, non-biased, not paid by the company, not bribed. We need objective standards by which to judge matters and we need wisdom to judge "gray" matters.

An operation may look successful, but a closer examination of the books may prove that someone is leaking funds, wasting money and driving the company into bankruptcy. Accountability means there must be transparency, you are not hiding anything. Accountability means you must prove your integrity.

A child, or a young person, or any person who is being supported by a generous benefactor, may never learn accountability. They may waste money, make bad decisions, mismanage their lives and yet there is no accountability. All they need to do is cry "Need more money!" and some enabler will take care of them.

But this is no way to live, and this can lead to disaster. We demand accountability from our political leaders and our business leaders. And when things fail, the person responsible must assume accountability, i.e. he must take responsibility for these failures. You failed an exam, you destroyed a business, it is for to stand up and take responsibility for your failures. This is a bitter pill to swallow.

And now in terms of Krav Maga. I believe there is very little accountability in Krav Maga. I believe a great deal is about the image you project, rather than the true abilities you possess. You look the part, you are a tough little Napolean or a Gorilla type, you talk tough, you talk "trash". You project confidence and exude charisma. Thus, you will be a (commercial) success. But it is all fake, and there is accountability.

Do we have any statistics of how successful our students fared in real life violent encounters?  (Most do not.) Are there objective outside observers to rate our system and teaching methods? Are we willing to subject our techniques to the test, to be challenged, to pressure-test them under the worst possible circumstances?

For the most the answer is no. There is no accountability, there is no transparency, and often little integrity.

So how do we handle this issue at IKI? How do we maintain our accountability, our honesty, integrity and transparency?

For one thing we are always open to questions and challenges. For the sake of a proper learning environment, we do expect that this will be done in a respectful way, not "Hey Instructor, your techniques don't work, let me show you a better technique".

As one of our European instructors told a student recently, did you pay to teach? i.e. you came to a seminar, you paid, so I assume you did not expect to teach the group, if so, please allow me to teach, and I will do my best to clarify any doubts. Everyone technique is open to critique, give it a fair chance, allow the instructor to explain, when you are ready - it can be tested with greater resistance. We do not want to hurt anyone unnecessarily.

But there is more. Our process of teaching is not just the What and How, but also the Why, and Why Not. Everyone technique is not only taught, How to do it, but Why we do it, why it works and why we have rejected other techniques. It is never - Follow me blindly, but rather allow me to demonstrate the process that led to this approach.

We allow for mistakes in our training, we allow for surprise, we allow for being caught off-guard, that is our objective way of testing techniques. In nearly every lesson that is a question that leads to a deeper understanding of the technique. We are always growing.
