Checking out my social media, it seemed that yet another new style of Krav Maga had emerged, Krav Bama. Now, everyone wants to be grandmaster so all you need to do is found your own system and you are Head Instructor and Grand Master. New styles of Krav Maga are like mushrooms after a rain, but less valuable.
The advertisement was in Hebrew, so it was a local school, not one of the many new foreign Krav Maga associations, so I took a closer look, and I was pleased. Bama, for those that don't speak Hebrew, means "Stage", this was an advertisement for "Stage Fighting", i.e. for those who would like to be actors, stage fighting, combat for the movies. And that is great. It is all for entertainment.
Unlike sports styles that jump on the self-defense bandwagon and declare themselves to be Krav Maga Combatives or whatever, this school is being honest. We are not teaching real self-defense, we are not claiming we can teach you how to fight back against armed attackers, terrorists, rapists, we are teaching you how to pretend, how to act, for the movies, for the entertainment of others. This is honest!
If only other associations behand with the same honesty. If only they advertised - Sports Combat Association; learn how to win a tournament and come home with a trophy! Or Artistic Martial Arts Association: Learn to express yourself through dance and martial arts movements.
All that would be a refreshing honest change. But what do we see? What are we bombarded with daily? Just that, Acting martial arts, Expressive martial arts, Sports martial arts presented and advertised as real self-defense.
