Leadership. People want to be leaders, people want to be on top. Most people are not suited to be leaders. Many want to be leaders, many will kill to be leaders. But they will still not be leaders.
Leaders are not elected.
Leaders are not appointed.
Leaders do not force their leadership upon others.
It is not your title that makes you a leader. An army does not make you a leader, a brutal police force does not make you a leader. Those can make you a tyrant, but not a leader.
Moshe/Moses was a leader. Yes, he was appointed by God, but that is not what made him a leader. To this very day he is known as Moshe Rabeinu, Moshe our Leader. That is the "title", we, the Jewish people, have bestowed upon him. This is how we the Jewish people have referred to him for the past 3,600 years after his death. But why? The people came to trust and accept Moshe not based upon his being chosen by God, but by his actions, his true leadership, his self-sacrifice, devotion to the people, and his humility.
Leaders emerge. A true leader is chosen by the people's faith in him. A true leader emerges.
Great rabbis emerge as leaders. They yield incredible power. A word from them can decide the fate of an election. They do not force their decisions upon others, but others seek their opinion and once it is known - it is followed by all.
The great Rabbi Moshe/Moses Feinstein of blessed memory earned the title "Gadol HaDor", "The Great One of the Generation". He did not win an election to earn this title, he did not hire a publicity or marketing team. There was no election campaign. He studied the Torah and the Talmud. In time his vast knowledge and profound understanding came to be known. He emerged as a leader.
He was never paid a salary for this. He never abused his power. He was, as Plato described centuries earlier, the Philosopher King. According to Plato the Greek, a philosopher king is a ruler who possesses both a love of knowledge, as well as intelligence, reliability, and a willingness to live a simple life. Such are the rulers of his utopian city Kallipolis. For such a community to ever come into being, "philosophers [must] become kings…or those now called kings [must]…genuinely and adequately philosophize" (The Republic, 5.473d).
Such a community has indeed come into being, it is the traditional Jewish community that lives by the laws and ethics of the Holy Bible. And in the context of this community a true leader emerges. He "rules" without an army, without Mafia hit men "soldiers". He rules by his wisdom.
With IKI - Israeli Krav International, I am approached by many who wish to be Leaders, or "Regional/National Representatives". I tell them that in the past I did have such appointed leaders: All had failed me, all stabbed me in the back and broke off with several instructors to form other competing organizations. I learned my lesson the hard way.
I no longer appoint leaders, now I use the Jewish system, the one that has worked for thousands of years; Leaders emerge by their own behavior.
You work hard, you earn your black belt, you produce many students, you come on Tour and Train, you send students on Tour and Train, you organize seminars, you travel to participate in seminars, you emerged and were recognized as a leader for your Krav Maga skill and leadership ability. You emerge as a leader. So do not write to me asking to be appointed a leader, this is fake and pointless. If you are a leader you will emerge as one. Those of you who are leaders already know it.
