My Way

I have a few people in mind with this blog, people who feel they have not yet achieved their potential. I want them to know that we each blossom at our own time, in our own way. Life is not a competition. And the first one now will later be last, for the times they are a-changin'. I am sitting in the lounge, relaxing with a cup of coffee and waiting for my flight home to Israel. I look at the people in the lounge, and I wonder how they got here, i.e. how did they earn enough money, flights, points, to be sitting in the Business Class lounge. To get here you have to either be flying Business Class, which is extremely expensive, or you have to earn enough points with your airline to be at a status where you are allowed free access to the lounge. Either way, you have to spend a lot of money. 

So I look around, I see some people in whose case there is no mystery; clearly high-tech professionals, obviously the company is footing the bill, others are older wealthier people. And then there are some young people, my guess, rich parents who spoil them, trust fund children. 

For me this is a big deal, how did I get here?

When I was younger, in my twenties, I had not "found myself". My friends had careers, in all sorts of industries, they were getting married, buying homes, settling down to conventinal life styles, and me? One can say I was left behind, or one can say I was destined for a different sort of journey. As Bob Dylan wrote, "So now I'm going back again
I got to get to her somehow
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter's wives
Don't know how it all got started
I don't know what they do with their lives
But me I'm still on the road
A-heading for another joint
We always did feel the same
We just saw it from a different point
Of view
Tangled up in blue."

So yes, I have a different journey. And now I look back, when I was young and not "making the scene", a rabbi gave me a cryptic message, "You will someday be dancing backwards and laughing".  Now I understand what he meant all those years ago, I will make it my own way, everyone is moving forward, but I am doing it my way, I am dancing backwards, i.e. a different direction, a different journey. I am dancing to my own rhythm, my own beat. 

and now, I look at all those people that I used to know...now Some are mathematicians, some are accountants, some recently retired from jobs they were happy to say goodbye to, but as for me, I am still on the road, heading for another joint, and I am loving it! I am seeing the world as a Krav Maga expert, I am doing it my way.

My dad, may he rest in peace, had two favorite songs, "The Impossible Dream", and "My Way" by Frank Sinatra. I am sitting in the lounge and thinking of my dad, and saying, Dad, I did it my way, just as you did, and I made it!!! That is why the lounge means so much to me, not because I need a free cup of coffee, but because it is a symbol, of my hard work, my innovative approach to Krav Maga, MY way. I made it dancing backwards and laughing. 

It took me a while to find my path while others were moving forward but eventually stagnating. I would often think of the words of the poet Robert Frost, "The Road Not Taken" there were two paths, two options in life...

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

And so my friends, find your own path, no matter how long it takes, and in the long run, that will make all the difference...
