I am looking at a society that in many ways is falling apart. People are leaving in droves, to wherever they can get away to. Some are staying, out of convenience or ideology. Some are staying because "this is my home". Some are staying because they have built a business that cannot be relocated, but for all it is a difficult situation; to leave the only home you have ever known? or to stay in a country where the government is no longer capable of governing?
South Africa is a fascinating country and a unique study-case; what happens when government fails? What happens when the government is so corrupt that it can no longer be relied upon for basic services?
What I have seen is
Some leave,
Some complain
Some expect others to bail them out of their mess.
Some seek outside help from abroad.
Some try political means to change the entire country.
Some work on their own communities.
What I see is that some pull up their sleeves and say, That's it, I am doing this myself. I have no one else to rely upon. It is up to me.
They have private security teams, they find a way to generate their own electricity and water supply. They do not rely upon outside help. Some even clean their own dishes rather than use cheap labor, usually from illegal immigrants who are also prone to "borrowing things".
This lesson, however, is universal. It is not only applicable in a society where society fails to fill its purpose, where government no longer governs. It applies to all of us. Self Defense. Self Preservation.
What do most people do? They take the lazy approach, the approach of - Someone else is responsible for my safety. The police, the government, it is their job to protect me, it is certainly not my job, it is not my responsibility. And that brings us back to South Africa. At some point, some people wake up and say, It Is my responsibility and I had better start taking care of myself and my family.
We can wait for society to fall apart and then learn the lesson, or we can learn it and apply it now. Protect yourself - No one but you will protect you. Even if you have a police force, a military, even private security, they are not always there when you need them. You are the first line of defense, and you are the last line of defense when all else fails. Learn the lesson now!
