Now

As children we learn patience, or at least we should be learning patience. A child demands attention NOW, he wants his toy NOW but a wise parent teaches the child that one must be patient, and that "you can't always get what you want". You have to struggle, you have to learn, you have to earn. We go to the School of Hard Knocks, and we learn that life is not easy, we learn that we must work hard to achieve what we want.

We learn that if we want to succeed in life, we will have to make an effort in school, earn good grades, get accepted into a good school. We learn that you get what you pay for, you get what you work for. If your parents give you everything you want, you will grow up spoiled and rotten and eventually be a burden to society. I respect people who started at the bottom, paid their dues, worked their way up. And once they succeeded, others came and said, You are wealthy, you are privileged, share your wealth. No sir, they should share their knowledge, their wisdom and their experience.

There is a movement in Judaism that is very anxious for the Messiah to come, they chant we want the Messiah NOW. Well, so far that has not worked. These days in Israel there is a movement that keeps posting all over the internet, about our hostages in Gaza, Bring them home NOW.

and it makes me wonder; whom are they talking to? God, OK, fine. The world? The world does not really care. The Israeli government, or military, they are already doing all they can, they don't need more encouragement.

This concept of NOW disturbs me. I was just speaking to a dear friend in Vienna, when all anti-Jewish sentiment erupted, many Jews purchased weapons. My friend runs a training facility, but the gun owners don't want to come train. They have a gun; they feel that is enough. When they do a quick gun course, they are essentially saying, We want safety and security NOW. i.e. we don't really want to train or make a major effort.

Krav Maga is a short cut for self-defense. It can be mastered, or at least one can become proficient, in much less time than traditional martial arts, and yet, it is not a NOW system. It too takes time and effort.

You cannot walk into a gym and expect to be fit by the end of the workout. You can't walk into a therpist and expect to be emotionally healed by the end of the session. You can't except to become a black belt in a week or be able to defend yourself. Even our easy to learn Krav Maga system requires a commitment.

Life is a process, it is not instant coffee, it takes time. Be wary of people who demand something NOW. (I certainly would not hire one to work for me)
