As a business student in graduate school, we were given various types of assignments to prepare us for the real world, for jobs. Somehow the assignments always began with, you the CEO, or chief financial officer of a major company etc. The assignment would then continue to list your limitations, or constraints. These often involved a certain budget, a certain timeframe, a certain size staff and a limitation in terms of your manufacturing capabilities. i.e. you could not produce a million cars overnight, you could not ship those cars within a day, you only had a certain budget for production and for shipping costs. These are all constrains, or limitations. That is how the real-world works.
Even in games such as Monopoly, you have to make the difficult decision, this property looks like a good investment, but can I afford it this time? I am constrained by the limitations of money; it is a difficult choice.
Watching a group of diverse students at a seminar I see this old college challenge come to life. There is a young girl, very short. There is a man with a serious leg injury, there is a man who runs a successful restaurant and can only train one night per week, there are older people, younger people, there are petite women, there are men with a few extra pounds. There are people who have reached an age where some body parts don't work the way they used to. I see constraints, limitations, but this should not limit us, it should make us see the possibilities, the Possibilities within Constraints. This is not a bad thing, it is the nature of life, and the nature of Nature. Each creature has its limitations. We do not have the claws or speed of a tiger, nor the strength of the bear, but they do not have our ability to think, plan and build. We each much achieve the maximim within our "limitations".
This is called being true to yourself.
We are not trying to be someone else, that is why I don't teach a petite woman to fight as if she is a heavy weight contender. That is not being yourself. No matter how good she might become it will not be enough to fight and defeat a large man. And yet, if she learns to fight within her limitations, she can prevail and survive.
IKI Krav Maga is about understanding our true selves, not trying to be someone else, understand our limitations and knowing how to apply them to worst-case scenarios.
A limitation is not a handicap, the fact that a bird is small is not a handicap, the fact that a Tiger cannot fly is not a handicap. The fact that some people do not have the flexibility to do a flying jump kick, is not a handicap, but I would not include that technique in their personal self-defense toolbox.
IKI believes in adapting to the individual, applying the technique to your situation and to your life circumstances. Just as with the business model there will always be constraints, the successful business learns to reach the maximum possibility within those constraints, find their market, find their niche.
We are not limited with our Krav Maga but to achieve the maximum benefit we learn to see the greatest Possibilities within our Constraints.
