I read the news today, oh boy. A terrorist just met his end, too late. Aatef Sabihi, aged 68, passed away in an Israeli prison, cause not stated to the public out of concerns for his privacy. He had spent more than 40 years in prison. I am amazed that Israel did not release him in one of those notorious prisoner exchanges.
What was his crime? In 1982 he abducted, reaped and brutally murdered 19-year-old soldier Dafna Carmon, and then dumped her mutilated body on the side of the road. In 1983 he kidnaped and murdered the child Danny Katz, age 14. He never expressed remorse for his brutal actions. Ironically, he worked for the Israeli railways systems as a security guard.
The news brought back memories, the name Danny Katz is hard to forget, being that my name is Katz as well, and the rape and murder of an Israeli female soldier is also too much to handle, or forget.
I think of why I became a Krav Maga student and then instructor, I think of a conversation I had this morning with a 74-year-old Krav Maga student. In a 2-3 hour breakfast, training, coffee, the Holocaust came up at least 3 times. We live with this memory. It is a living memory for us all. And now October 7 is also a living memory that will go down in Jewish history.
I think of a 14-year-old boy, a boy with the family name Katz. Leaves his home, never returns, his mutilated body is found near a cave. I think of a beautiful 19-year-old Israeli girl, serving proudly in the Israel Defense Forces, she is attacked, she is beaten, she is violated, she is raped, she is murdered, she is mutilated and her mangled body is tossed on the side of the road like some discarded garbage. In think of this and my blood boils, I think of this and I am enraged.
This is what Krav Maga is all about. I wish I could turn back the clock and teach them some simple moves that possibly could have saved their lives. A child! A solider in the Israeli army! We cannot tolerate this disgrace!
This is why training must be obligatory. Each and every one of us must take this upon ourselves. We must make a vow Never Again! We must take it upon ourselves and our families to train, to learn to fight back. No one can force another to train; each individual must make this decision for themselves. All I can do is attempt to inspire, to motivate.
I think of these two young people who should still be with us today, who should be raising families, who should be smiling as they were in their last known photographs, not lying on the side of the road, tossed out like garbage.
When will we wake up! Training is not optional, unless you view your life as optional. Respect yourself, stand up for yourself.
Today I trained a 74-year-old Jewish man. He knows that he as a Jew he will be a target. But anyone of us can be a target. What will it take? How many must die, be raped, be abused, mutilated before you decide it is too much?
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind, the answer is blowing in the wind.
