Reality Check Krav Maga

Inspiration is everywhere. I saw the following on a skit.
A totally underqualified self-absorbed woman whose only "asset" is her beauty, is applying for a job. She is asking for "Six figures, a pension plan, benefits, and a month vacation yearly, plus flexible hours." And then she smiles confidently at the less attractive woman and asks, "What have you got for me?"
The reply is brilliant and very appropriate for Krav Maga.
"A reality check. You are going to have to adjust your expectations". In the end she was told she could take her month vacation right now. She left with no job.
And that is how it is with most styles of Krav Maga, and most "Reality based martial arts", or whatever you want to call them. Most of them are marketing gimmicks, a way to jump on a successful band wagon. Some instructors are sincere but not properly trained, or unrealistic, and here is where the truth from that comedy show comes into play.
We need that hard-core woman at the employment office. She knows the score. She knows the reality of the market, She is IT. She knows the truth, she knows what kind of jobs are out there and what it takes to get those jobs, and she is looking the naive, self-absorbed woman in the eye, and saying you need to have a reality check, you are not as important as you think you are. You are not as beautiful as you think you are. Your skills are not impressive. You need to Lower your expectations to match reality.
I have studied many martial arts. I have trained in many styles and schools. They all serve some purpose, but very few were really designed with a true understanding of current violence. They use techniques that someone needs to look them straight in the eye, like the School of Hard Knocks woman at the employment office and say, You need a Reality Check. You need to lower your expectations, of what you can actually do under stress, of what kind of techniques will actually work, of what you can actually remember/recall, under stress. You need a reality check of how you feel when you are walking in the street, going about your business, waiting for a bus, walking to your car when suddenly, out of nowhere, bang, a man with a knife or a gun is in your face. You are not in the dojo anymore!
Wisdom can appear from anywhere, including a TV comedy, the woman applying for the job is coming from her own world, shaped from her own expectations and the way she views herself. But the woman at the employment office is not getting personal. Her world is shaped not by her own perceptions but years of studying people and studying the work/employment market. She is the voice of Reality. Lady, you need a reality check, that is what I can offer you but not a job.
Most martial artists need someone to tell them the same truth. They have colorful well-designed flyers for their courses. They have good marketing people, but they have no lady at the employement office to set them straight and tell them straight out - This is not going to work in the real world. Your view of yourself is not realistic. What can I offer you? A reality check.
