I was around when we used rotary phones, but of course as a child phones were not for us to use freely. Calls were expensive and parental permission was required. As a teenager I experienced the press the button phones, and that seemed like something out of a science fiction film. And then, wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles, the cordless phone. And today, a phone that you can put in your pocket and leave the house with. I have seen a lot of changes in my lifetime.
I have also seen changes in Krav Maga. My journey in martial arts began by searching the Yellow Pages, something unknown to kids these days. There were no online videos, in fact there was no online, no computers. I walked, or took the subway from school to school checking them out.
Things have changed.
When I was training, I took notes on napkins and random scraps of paper, we certainly had no videos. Things have changed. Today everyone is posting "reels", short videos of their classes. If you are not posting, you don't exist. And then what happens?
What happens is you know you are being watched and guess what? You want to look good, you want to look cool, you want to make an impression. And therefore, you act, train and teach differently. The result is that the very nature of teaching changes, and thus the essence of the art changes. I have this in several teachers, whereas before the advent of social media, they were regular teachers, but after the emergence of social media their entire persona changed. Suddenly it was about being a Bad Ass, a foul-mouthed Tough Guy.
Whereas before these guys were just teaching, and were focused on improving the abilities of the students, now it was all about appearing as a season street fighter. Thus the focus changes.
I have seen this with my own eyes, I have seen the teachers before and after. And the quality of their teaching has deteriorated to fit the image that they believe sells best. i.e. the lowest common denominator that reaches the maximum number of potential students. Back in the day these teachers were just teaching, they were not trying to make an impression on their students who already knew them well. But today this has changed. Everyone has a social media account; everyone is trying to look tougher than the next. The result is the dumbing of martial arts, in particular the reality self defense oriented arts. and this is truly sad.
