My brother's work includes organizing groups for disaster relief. They bring Jewish groups, sometimes high school teenagers, and sometimes retirees, to communities that have been hit hard by natural disaster and by poverty. He says that sometime a plan will be designed and then when the work of draining basements or tearing out floors or building a wall begins, they discover that; The Plan is wrong, the plan as prepared by experts far from the scene of the actual work is a good plan but when the team arrives on the scene, everything suddenly looks different. Tings change when you are there in person. In life, in construction, and in self-defense you cannot always follow a blueprint. That is his experience.
He tells of times that he received a detailed report over the phone, however in person, things looked very different. Such is the world of disaster relief.
Krav Maga Application.
Instructors write books, there is in fact a book called the Bible of Krav Maga, a little presumptuous, I think. There are many manuals for martial arts programs, and there are many students who want an exact blueprint of how a fight will turn out. I tell them I cannot provide this, for I know the same truth my brother learned through 20 years of disaster relief work; until you get there, until you are in the experience, you really do not know what needs to be done.
And yet, most martial arts programs are based on this false assumption.
When I was earlier on in my martial arts journey I spent a great deal of money on books, manuals and videos where we were taught how this punch will lead to the reaction, and then this kick will create that opening, and you can be sure of how a human body will respond. Thus you have a clear cut blueprint.
But I do not hold this to be true. My life experience and research has to led to other conclusion, a fight, a self-defense situation, a war, is chaos, unpredictable and unknowable. The key is to have tools, to be trained, and to learn to think on your feet: Adapt, Adjust, Attack, get Away.
To assume otherwise is like I was taught early you, when you ASSUME, you make an Ass of me and of You. You fail. Assume nothing, be prepared for everything and anything.
Like my brother and his team arriving on the scene after a flood or a hurricane; arrive trained, come with tools, and skills, get the lay of the land and adapt. There is no blueprint that one can know in advance when it comes to true self-defense.
