My brother works with helping youth find their faith, find their path in life, find their purpose and direction. One day, a colleague of his, an orthodox rabbi with a vast amount of Biblical and Rabbinic knowledge, joined forces with my brother. He wanted to engage the youth in a discussion of life, values, faith, the Bible. He pulled out a $20 dollar bill and challenged; anyone who can ask a question for which I have no answer, will receive twenty dollars cash.
My brother was not happy. This was not the way he worked.
The offer made by the learned rabbi was more of a "Stump the Rabbi" type of challenge, test my knowledge, but it did not address the real issues the young people might be facing. A student may have a question of faith, or purpose; how do I know that I have a purpose in life? How do I find my purpose in life? What was I born, why was I placed here at this time?
These are questions for which the answers cannot be found in books, but only in life experiences, and in life's interactions, in relationships, in falling down and rising up again, in facing yourself in moments of truth.
When it comes to self-defense, to Krav Maga, there will be circumstances, situations that will never come up in the dojo, in the training hall. They will not be found in a kata, they will not be found in a drill, and they will not be found in a One-Step. And in fact, the defense might be unique for you and your circumstances.
Did any Sensei in any dojo plan for a scenario where the copilot stabbed the pilot and tried to crash the plane? Did any instructor teach how a passenger should open the door to the cockpit, clear out a badly hurt pilot, subdue a terrorist holding an axe, and stabilize the aircraft?
These answers are not found in any book, that is why we must allow for individual thought and expression, true questions that come from your life, from your soul.
Perhaps the student wonders, will I ever have the courage to act in a stressful situation? Will I be able to pull of that gun defense when faced with a real gun? These are not questions that one can find in a manual, in a syllabus. There are doubts in one's heart, there are lingering questions that gnaw at us.
We must arm ourselves and our students with the ability to handle the unknown and the unknowable, to have the tools to deal with the questions that life will challenge us with, to deal with the unknown danger lurking behind the corner in downtown New York City, or Amsterdam, to cope with the Chaos of life.
