Sometimes the ability to say "I told you so", rings hollow and is joyless. I have been warning about this sort of event since I was in my late teens. The worst of our fears have come true, it was totally foreseeable. but that is for another blog.
There is a common theme I have heard over the years. When people hear that we train to fight off terrorists with knives, handguns and even long weapons, the reaction is often the same, "C'mon, you don't really believe you can defend against a violent attacker! Not someone who really wants to hurt you. You don't really believe you can do anything?"
I always find these comments insulting and disturbing. But I have been proven correct. The events of this past Saturday, when armed terrorists came into many villages in the southern part of Israel, have proven that those who take a more positive attitude, a proactive attitude, have indeed saved the day and prevented an even far worse situation. These events have produced more heroes in one day than many wars lasting months or years.
The people who saved many in these communities were not the military. It was not the IDF, Israel Defense Forces. They did not arrive on time for reasons that will have to be investigated thoroughly. It was individuals, armed civilians, yes, armed civilians with handguns, and local police. I.e., not SWAT teams, not Special Forces, but regular off duty police officers. I have seen videos; I have heard testimonials. It was individuals with training. and yes, they made a difference, a difference of life and death. Usually, police are not listed as casualties of war but in this war, as of this writing, we know of at least 44 police officers killed while heroically defending their communities and others. Their acts of self-sacrifice would outdo any Hollywood movie.
This is why we train, we train for the worst-case scenarios, and hope they never came. Now they came...
Our training is not only techniques; it is to break this unacceptable, pathetic, pacifist excuse that, "if a bad guy wants to hurt, there is really nothing you can do." This is a lie created by lazy people who do not want to train, who are unmotivated. It is unacceptable. You can make a difference. The armed and unarmed trained individuals saved many lives on Saturday by taking action, action that they had trained for. An off-duty police officer with a handgun killed many terrorists and saved many lives, and there are more and more stories of individual bravery that are just beginning to come out. Books shall be written. Where our government, military, and intelligence failed, trained individuals succeeded. This is a true Nation of Warriors and they proved themselves this week. Individuals, armed only with a handgun that holds 15 bullets, took out terrorists who were armed to the teeth, for they had trained for these worst-case scenarios. They emerged as true guardian angels and prevented an even worse tragedy. I hope they are recognized with presidential awards and serve as an example for future officers, indeed as examples for all of us. We can do something. We must be prepared.
There are no more excuses, Yes, our training saves lives. Krav Maga, gun training, you have run out of excuses.
