Why we cannot see the danger

Why can we not see the danger in front of us?
Why can we not see the danger lurking behind us?
Why can we not see that that techniques we are being taught are useless? (or even counter-productive)
I will answer.
But first I will clarify.
I was sitting with friends and discussing how is it that the Israeli Intelligence did not see the attack coming from our sworn enemies on October 7, 2023? It should have been obvious.
All the information was there. All the reports were there, the Israeli Look-Out Girls reported accurately and repeatedly the dangers, and yet the Powers-that-Be failed to see the danger.
Long ago in the Book of Psalms the poet writes of those who have eyes but cannot see.
And nothing has changed since then.
Having the facts does mean you can see what is happening. The rabbis ask, Who is wise? he who can see the unborn. And yet we must wonder, why can't others see the unborn? an animal that will soon give birth shows signs! but those who do not perceive cannot conceive.
This is true on a national level and our leadership and military were caught unprepared, but it is equally true on an individual level. I said to my friends, with no intention to offend. We all know there is increased violence, but are you training in Krav Maga? No. Why not? Because none are as blind as those who do not wish to see. and we do not wish to see because we do not wish to be bothered. If we truly acknowledge that there is a problem, then we must do something about it, and this we cannot be bothered with.
And then there are those who train in techniques that defy logic, that go against all human understanding. Just today I saw again a "Krav Maga demonstration", one student stabs another, the defender grabs the wrist in mid-motion, a knife attack! a determined attacker striking full force with the intent to cut and some instructor believes that the Defender, caught off-guard, caught by surprise, will have the cognitive mindset to react so fast with such precision as to catch and grab an attacker's wrist, in the precise location with perfect timing, and then, get this, HOLD the attacker in place, not moving his arm at all, while the Defender delivers several blows to the head of the Attacker while the arm with the knife remains remarkable still!, and then the Defender flips the wrist of the Attacker, sending him to the ground.
What a Fool Believes. This is Fantastic, and I use that word in its original form, it is a Fantasy.
Why can we not see what is clearly false, and why can we do not see the dangers all around us. Evil walks besides us!
Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato discussed this many years ago. He describes two types of blindness. One is that one's eyes are covered so that he does not see what is in front of him, the Second that his eyes fool him, that he sees a pole and thinks it is a man, a man and thinks it is a pole. Luzzato continues and expounds, as if he is speaking to us today, One, this blindness does not allow us to see the obstacles in our way, obstacles in the way of the world, tendencies that exist in the world that we should be wary of, and it happens that the Foolish Simple ones (innocent naive ones) are walking confidently and then fail, fall, and get lost, without fear ever having reached them. This means they did not feel the Fear, the lost the Gift of Fear. Fear is an early warning system, but those who suffer from this form of blindness have no fear! The rabbi is teaching us that the Naive ones do not sense the Fear, and therefore they fall without ever having known that there was danger lurking.
But the second blindness is even worse! "And the second mistake, and it is worse than the first, is that one's vision is distorted and warped to the point that one sees the Bad as if it is really Good, and the Good as if it is Bad, and as a result of this they become emboldened and hold on to their bad ways. (This reenforces their bad behavior). For it is not enough that they are lacking the vision of the Truth to see the Evil that they are facing, but now they can find great proof and rational to prove their false narrative, to justify their bad behavior and false doctrines, and this is the Evil that brings them to the pit of destruction, to their doom. and this is just as it is written, 'Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes'" (Isaiah Chapter 6 יְשַׁעְיָהוּ) (Path of the Just, Chapter 3)
This I would apply to martial arts systems, including most Krav Maga, that are so blind they see the opposite of the Truth and hold it to be true.
Now the other blindness, is that we simply are blind to the danger around us. We see nothing. and why is that so? Rabbi Luzzato uses a well-known Aramaic expression, Milta de lo ramya aley de enash, lav ataite. A word, (a matter) that a person does not focus on, is not on his mind. I.e. if we do not think about something, focus on it, we shall not see it. And that is why despite all the media coverage about the increase in violence, those who do not focus on it do not see the need to learn to defend themselvs.
Moshe Chaim Luzzatto was born in 1707 in the Jewish ghetto of Padua, Republic of Venice. The son of Jacob Vita and Diamente Luzzatto. He understood fear and violence, but his leaning was towards Mysticism, other worldly issues. He was a mystic, and yet we can see that his Wisdom and his Teachings from so many years ago, are very relevant, for me he is writing about Krav Maga. What is true of the Spiritual world is also true of the physical world. Truth is truth!
We must open our eyes, see the dangers around us, and be objective. But first we must be aware that we are afflicted with blindness. Recognizing the problem is the first step.
