Your Way and Mine

A quiet pleasant morning, our last day in Treviso. The seminars have been great, we have met some amazing people. We have shared stories; we have heard stories. We have been training in Krav Maga self-defense, but there is more than just physical self-defense.

People become, scarred for life, by words and actions, by insensitivity, by betrayal. We have been discussing this was well. During my years of teaching I have seen relationships ruined, by misunderstandings, but the lack of ability to see another point of view. People live by, I am hurt, I will "take my ball and go home", end of story.

I have seen students and instructors who cannot get along and part ways, when this need not be the case. I have seen instructors who cannot get along with their colleagues, I have seen jealous over ranks and status, even over issues such as who sits next to the head instructor.

We are sitting and enjoying a quiet breakfast while a song comes on, an old song that I heard in California, the Eagles, a classic radio staple.

But every morning, I wake up and worry
What's gonna happen today
You see it your way, and I see it mine
But we both see it slippin' away (The Eagles, 1974)

Really it is that simple. It is rare that differences are so great that people cannot work it out, if there is good will, maturity, and a willingness to try and see it from the other's point of view, from the others' perspective. You might feel slighted, disrespected, you did not get the rank you feel you deserved, someone else received their rank before you, you felt someone else did not deserve the rank.

I am reminded of a sign I saw in a local synagogue; it was over the heated debate and arguments about the air conditioning. Believe it or not this led to major arguments and even to people leaving the congregation, but the Gabbai,(sexton) the one in charge of such matters in the synagoge, could never please everyone, there was always someone who felt disrespected. One morning I saw a new sign, "There is not a gabbai in the world who can make everyone happy, some like it cold, some like it warmer, it is not possible to please everyone. If you are cold, try to find a seat where the air-conditioning does not hit you so hard, if you are too warm, try to find a seat in a more direct line with the cold air coming out of the air-conditioner. Or, wear a sweater if it is too cold. Yours truly, the Gabbai/sexton"

This simple letter contained a profound truth. You see it your way, I see it mine, and soon someone will simply pick up and leave, words are spoken and it is all over.

Thinkin’ about all the things that we said
And comin’ apart at the seams

Lets' try and see things from the other guy's point of view. Perhaps he worked very hard for his rank, but he will never be able to do a back-spinning jump kick at age 72, so the instructor gave him a "discount" on account of his age and ability. Perhaps he has other qualities that you did not see. Perhaps he truly did his best. There is no need for you to quit because you feel standards were lowered, try seeing it his way, or else we will all see it slipping away, and then we all lose. We can't please all the people all the time. It is simply mathematically impossible.

An old song caresses the morning, a timeless message.
