I am fortunate. I am very fortunate. I was born to a fine family with wonderful parents who were my teachers and role models. I had the privilege of knowing three of my four grandparents, and I had aunts and uncles of whom I could be very proud for their contributions to the Jewish community. And yet I learend early on - you must rely upon yourself.
I realized this on my own, but yet my father also made it very clear to me. Son, you will have to learn to stand up and fight your own battles.
Now it is many years later, my parents, grandparents and most of relatives that I knew have passed on to the other world. And I have lived a long time and seen much and studied much. And now I believe more than ever, you need to rely upon yourself.
As a child I did not know about government corruption. I did not know that politicians care more about being elected than protecting you. Again, I am fortunate, I lived during the times of some pure politicians who were truly concerned about the people; Menachem Begin, Rabbi Meir Kahane, Yitchak Shamir and perhaps a handful of others. And yet, the lesson remains, take care of yourself. Learn to protect yourself. Don't leave your protection in the hands of others.
The best of police, or military, will fail you. Unless you are in a financial position to hire personal guards, you had better learn to protect yourself, not as a "hobby", not as a sport, for your survival, for life is harsh, and can be cruel.
You can eat crap your entire life, and then, when suffering from poor health, decide to go on a diet and learn to eat properly. Or you can develop good habits from your youth. If you wait for an attack to make the decision to study self-protection, Krav Maga, it may be too late.
This past year more than ever we have seen that those who rely on others to protect them, will be disappointed. Your first line of defense must be yourself, and your last line of defense, when others fail you, must also be yourself. Cultivate yourself, your - self. Learn to protect yourself.
I know my words fall on deaf ears for the most part. If you bothering to read this article, you are already in the intelligent minority. If you are wise, you will take these words to heart. Who is wise? Ask the rabbis of old, "He who sees that which is yet unborn, he who perceives the future".
The young lion in Lion King asks his dad. "So we are good dad?", Yes, we are good, "and you will always be there to protect me? ". No, the father will not always be there, but he can raise you right.
Corruption is everywhere. Your well-being is nobody's priority but your own. The government? They have their own concerns. And sometimes they will even "dispense" of their own when it suits their needs and agenda. Do not rely upon anyone but yourself.
I can still picture it, long ago...the house in Savyon, Israel, my dad relaxing, me as a young boy, perhaps ten years old, telling my father about some incident, some altercation. "Son, you will have to learn to stand up for yourself and fight your own battles",
Yes, this is true, Dad. Yes, this is true.
