Change the World

When I was a child growing up in Israel one of the most well-known songs was "Ani ve Ata", "Me and You". It was written and sung by the legendary Israeli singer Arik (Aryeh Leib) Einstein. There was no one who did not know this song, it was like an anthem.

I think back, going back 56 years, and the message is still clear, You and I, we will change the world, You and I, and then all the others will join, others have said this before us, it does not matter, you and I will change the world. It will be difficult at first, but no matter, you and I will change the world. 

Arik was young, I was a child living with my parents and three brothers, just a shy boy hearing the song on the radio on the way to school, you and I will change the world.

A lifetime has passed, Arik passed away, a heavy smoker, my parents have passed on, and I think of the message, Did Arik succeed in changing the world? Of course he was not a social revolutionary, just a singer/songwriter echoing a message. He is known as perhaps the most famous and influential Israeli artist of our young history. His impact is felt everywhere; there is hardly an Israeli over the age of 20 who does not know his songs and his films. 

I don't know if he changed the world, but he added a great deal of beauty, music, happiness, for many. He was deeply mourned, even the president and prime minister of Israel attended his funeral and mourned him as a national symbol, an embodiment of our country.

And I ask, can we change the world? You and I, can we change the world?

My answer is Yes, we can. 

We change the world when we smile at someone, we change the world when we treat someone with kindness. Perhaps we can turn someone's day around with a simple gesture of kindness. Perhaps we can turn someone's life around, and then they, in turn might change the world. We change the world slowly, a little at a time, a little every day. 

As Krav Maga instructors we are changing the world, one individual at a time, meaningful changes. I have seen this over the decades that I have been teaching. People that came back from the depths of depression and desperation, people that have changed their own lives and then the lives of others. I have seen it with my own eyes. 

I think back, a little boy on the bus...a young upcoming artist named Arik Einstein singing a sweet simple song, You and I, we can change the world, others said it before, never mind, and I still believe it. 

We can change the world.
