Creating Opportunities

I recall a student in Ukraine some years ago, all decked out in fake military gear, camouflage uniform, boots ec, that is how she presented herself at my Krav Maga seminar. And she had questions. She constantly wanted to know, what next? What is the follow up? What she essentially was asking for was a detailed step-by-step, paint by numbers, type of solution to a violent chaotic unpredictable situation. She wanted clear answers in an unclear world where no man shall see my face and live.
This I did not have, as a matter of principle and philosophy. What I teach is the initial defense based on simple natural body motions. After that the follow-up and the finishing moves depend you, and on APC - Ability, Purpose, Circumstances. There is no plan because there can be no plan, violence is chaotic. We have drills, and we have tools, and as Bruce Lee wrote, when you are properly trained your tools will strike at the correct moment, but we do not teach a step-by-stop, color by numbers approach. It is not in tune with reality.
We teach self-defense and the creation of Opportunities for counterattack or escape. If we were to teach self-defense as a kata, as a set of pre-aranged forms, we would in fact be creating dependence. You would believe that your ability to defend yourself depended upon your following our steps precisely and methodically.
But we want you to be independent, to be able to make your own decisions in the moment of truth when it is you against the chaos of the world. Your instructor will not be there with you physically, but hopefully his lessons will be. Give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime. In Judaism we believe that the highest form of giving is to give opportunities, not create continued dependence. With IKI Krav Maga we wish to create students who can stand up for themselves, against violence and against the turmoils of life.
