Membership card, new member in the Oyama dojo, new beginnings are exciting, circa....1980's
A newly opened jar of coffee smells great. The aroma reaches us and ignites our senses, we wish every cup of coffee would feel this way, but that is not possible. The rest of the jar will be, well, the rest of the jar. And such is all of life. New relationships are exciting but long-term relationships provide stability and support. We do need some "newness", now and then. That is why people try new restaurants and travel to new locations, but at the end of the vacation, they return home, to comfort, peace and support. The return home to routine.
But there are some people who cannot stick to anything, there is an expression, a jack of all trades but a master of none. I call it the "TV switching channels syndrome" where the person cannot enjoy a single program because he is always wondering what is on the next channel. The same is true of dating, perhaps a more desirable spouse is just around the corner, so why settle for the one you are with? The only problem is eventually you will run out of corners to turn and end up alone.
And this is true of your self-defense skills as well, only here the price you will pay for this mistake is higher, much higher.
What is my secret to success? Why have I achieved more than any other student from our Krav Maga Jerusalem school? Am I the most talented? Am I the strongest?
No. There is only one reason, I am the most dedicated, I never quit.
Everything is great when it is a New Beginning. There is a thrill, but after a while that initial enthusiasm wears off. The daily routine becomes, a routine, progress at times is slow. You reach a plateau and you just do not see how you will ever reach the next level. The Thrill is gone. So what do you do When it is no longer exciting?
That is when your true character emerges, that is when you must remind yourself why you joined in the first place, what your goals where on that exciting day one. Look back at yourself and see yourself at Day One, signing up, full of enthusiasm, and say, - I will not let you down. I will not turn back on this dream of mine! I will remain true to my goal!
Here is the key to your success in martial arts or in any field. Continue when it is no longer exciting. and here is a little secret, if you stick with it when it is no longer exiting, eventually that excitement comes back, tenfold! the real excitement is in the future. When you see what you have accomplished, when you see the journey you have traversed, when you feel your progress and achievement, that is when the real excitement begins.
My simple advice for success in martial arts is this, when it is no longer exciting, keep going, the best is yet to come.
