A Thousand Miles

December 2015, Thailand - Israel

I noticed writing on the wall in Thailand, in English. Something along the lines of ....One thousand miles of travel is no longer than one mile when you travel for love.

I understand. When you are in love a journey of 1,000 miles or even much longer nowadays, is no longer than one mile. You are so eager to see the person that the travel time and distance do not matter.

I get it, sort of...If we apply it to martial arts training.

No effort is too much for the things you really want. This truth is as old as time itself.

I imagine in ancient times no one ever said they had no time for hunting or harvesting. Well if they did they died out and their descendants are no longer among us. Such people do not survive as a race.

I imagine no nation ever said they had no time for forming self-defense groups. Every ancient nation had its warriors or else they did not survive. Those are what we call self correcting problems.

If you do not plant, hunt, harvest, gather essential food in one way or another, you will perish. If you do not learn to defend yourself, as an individual or as a nation, you will perish.

And yet today we ignore this.

We destroy our natural resources, we ignore vital issues, and we plant the seeds of our destruction.

Why? because as powerful as is the desire to survive, greed and laziness are also very powerful. When greed and laziness win we all lose.

Thailand, a land of contrasts, the very rich and the very poor.

The king, who is worshiped as a god, is everywhere, but nowhere.

Hard working Thai woman, just struggling to survive.

The rich and the poor, traveling by tok tok limo.

Over the years I have traveled more than a thousand miles for my training, much more. When I would attend Karate College it took a full one month's salary to cover my trip and training, but I did it.

When I first joined the Oyama dojo Sensei Romero said to me, "Our students pay their dojo dues before they pay their rent". That is when I knew it was the right place for me.

When you make something a priority there is always time and money for it. When you travel for love a thousand miles is no longer than one mile. When you travel for martial arts training the same is true. Our students have traveled to Israel to train with us from all over the world, from Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada, Chile and Argentina, Puerto Rico and Span. They have come from Iceland , Norway, Denmark and Sweden, from Italy, France and Holland, from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Slovakia, The Czech Republic, and Poland. From Russia, Ukraine Romania and Croatia. From the United Kingdom, the Cayman Islands and Belgium. From South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. They have come from China and Japan.

A thousand miles is as one. As Rabbi Wehl used to say, "It is all a matter of priorities".
